The HWA Crown Awards 2025

Celebrating the best in historical writing published between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025. Submissions are now open! Who will win this year’s Debut, Gold and Non-Fiction Awards? Due to some technical problems with the site (sigh) we extended the date for submissions for the HWA Crowns to midnight on Friday 9 May 2025. The HWA / Dorothy Dunnett Society Short Story Award 2025

Can you transport a reader into the past? We are looking for unpublished stories of up to 3500 words for our 2025 competition. Entries are now open and you have until 1 July 2025 to submit. The entry fee is still only £5 and we look forward to reading your work.

The HWA Crown Awards 2023

The winners of the Gold Crown for fiction, the Non-fiction Crown and the Debut Crown were revealed on Wednesday, 22 November 2023 at an awards party at Crypt on the Green in Clerkenwell.

We’d like to thank the authors and publishers for their submissions. It was exciting and heartening to see historical writing in such good shape, and in so many diverse forms. We’re also extremely grateful to this year’s judges for their commitment and hard work. The winners were: For the Gold Crown – The Colour Storm by Damien Dibben. For the Non-Fiction Crown – The Captain’s Apprentice by Caroline Davison and for the Debut Crown The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho  by Paterson Joseph
